Functional lab testing vs. your yearly physical

Medically reviewed by Alicia Jimenez, APRN · November 2026

A yearly physical usually checks a short list of markers to rule out disease. A functional panel adds markers like fasting insulin, vitamin D, ferritin, full thyroid and inflammation, and reads results against optimal ranges, not just normal ones.

Why “normal” isn't always the whole story

Reference ranges are built to catch disease. You can sit at the edge of normal for iron, vitamin D or blood sugar and still feel tired, foggy or stuck with weight.

What a broader panel adds

Fasting insulin can show early insulin resistance before glucose rises. Ferritin shows iron stores. A full thyroid panel adds free T3 and free T4 to TSH. hs-CRP measures inflammation.

What it can't do

Functional testing doesn't diagnose disease on its own. If a result needs medical follow-up, we refer you to the right specialist.

What happens with your results

We review every result with you and turn it into a plan: food, supplements, or a medical program like weight loss or an iron infusion.

Individual results vary. This article is general information, not medical advice. Book a consultation to talk about your situation.
